I was at an Internet marketing conference a while back and I was talking to a few people after a seminar, as you do.
They were all young guns (made me feel real old!) who had recently moved into web marketing.
Most were looking at marketing a few sites with traditional models - you know the score, affiliate programs, pay per click and so on.
Boy, were they keen! These kids grew up watching the Internet evolve and knew all the basic stuff about how they could make money this way.
Don't get me wrong, they weren't just looking to make money quickly and easily, they were all in this for the long haul and wanted to do this for a living...
and they were ready to jump in the deep end! I was, however, quite shocked at what they didn't know rather than at what they did.
They could all tell me loads of stuff about all kinds of new web 2.
0 stuff and could probably 'twitter' their way into the history books at some point, but none of them actually had managed to grasp how to turn their base knowledge into something that made them money.
All they seemed to be able to do was talk about it.
So far they hadn't been able to produce the goods.
Turns out they had all stalled at the same specific point.
They knew what they wanted to do.
They'd set up sites, and even bought into web advertising and affiliate schemes.
Some of them were even making a few dollars here and there, but none of them was making enough money to call this a worthwhile career yet.
And, all of them said it was down to the fact that they couldn't seem to find a way to access the really useful information that would show them exactly what to do.
So they were still stuck with a model that involved a bit too much trial and error.
Most of them had done their research and had downloaded stuff like e-books to get them initially going.
Some of them had downloaded more than one potential information solution, whilst some had stopped at one.
All of them agreed on one point though - the stuff they'd downloaded hadn't told them anything much more than what they already knew.
They had the basics already, and they got it again and again...
but they didn't get much else that was more useful to them.
It was kind of hard in some respects, but definitely worthwhile, to be the one to wake them up a little...
and to have to tell them that the Internet is not as great as they think it is sometimes and that a lot of people selling Internet marketing information products aren't bothered about whether they really help someone - they just want the money.
On the other hand it was good to be able to then tell them that they can find high quality downloadable help that will take them one stage further (or maybe even two or three stages) and help them make money from their Internet marketing efforts.
I told them all to go look for sites that that don't offer overnight fixes, because they simply don't exist.
It's really obvious when the Internet marketing advice on offer works...
as the proof is there for everyone to see.
So, go have another look and see what great offerings you can find!
